Inside the Holiday Housing Program: One Month of Hope
A look inside Parker Project’s Holiday Housing Program—and why one month of rent or mortgage support can bring stability to families facing childhood cancer during December.

For most families, the holiday season is a time of warmth and celebration. For families battling childhood cancer, December can look very different: hospital stays, medical bills, missed work, and the constant fear of falling behind. The holidays can become another layer of stress in a year already defined by crisis.
That is why Parker Project created the Holiday Housing Program: a simple, powerful idea that has transformed hundreds of lives by providing one month of rent or mortgage support during the holidays.
Why One Month Matters So Much
Families in pediatric cancer treatment often live in survival mode. Treatment schedules are relentless, parents can lose income, and costs pile up. Housing—the largest bill for many families—is often the first expense at risk.
When we help cover a portion of a family’s December rent or mortgage, we are doing more than paying a bill. We are giving them:
- A moment without fear of eviction.
- Room to direct more of each dollar toward their child’s care.
- A chance for siblings to feel safe and keep familiar routines.
- Time for parents to focus on healing, not housing.
That stability does not end when January arrives. It can ripple forward, giving families the breathing room they need to recover financially and emotionally.
The Emotional Impact: What Families Tell Us
Parents often tell us December is the hardest month of the year—not because of treatment alone, but because of everything treatment takes away. One mother shared that she had been choosing between rent and gas to get her child to chemotherapy. Another family was preparing to leave their home just before Christmas. A father said he had not slept in days because he did not know how he would keep the lights on.
When we call to tell families their housing is covered, we hear relief, tears, gratitude, and hope. One month of stability can become the moment they remember they are not alone.
The Numbers Behind the Hope
In just two years, Parker Project has provided more than $400,000 in holiday housing support to 235 families nationwide. Forty percent of the children we helped were under six—babies and toddlers who still believe in the wonders of winter.
As we enter our third season, we are working toward a milestone: supporting 300 families in three years. Every family represents a story of resilience. Every child represents a reason to keep going.
Housing support is one part of the practical help that lets families stay focused on their child. With community behind them, families can find a little more stability through one of the hardest seasons of the year.
